TOPEKA, Kan.- The Iowa State Cyclone swimmers finished the weekend at the Kansas Classic at the Capitol Federal Natatorium with a fourth place overall finish. The Cyclones ended the meet with a score of 410. No. 21 Notre Dame finished in first with 976.5 points.
“This meet was a great experience for our women,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “Having prelims and finals over the three days, it really helps us prepare for the Big 12 championship meet. They learned what they can do and what they can't do as far as their preperation and getting ready to swim fast especially over the two days.”
The Cyclones started out the last evening of finals with Samantha Fossum leading the team in the 1650 freestyle event. Fossum finished with a 10th-place finish and time of 17:38. Elizabeth Kleiner followed close behind with a time of 17:51, finishing 11th. Also competing for the Cyclones was Maria Gannon, finishing with a time of 18:51 in 19th.
Freshman Marissa Engel continued to prove herself this weekend, finishing the 200 backstroke in the “A” finals in seventh-place. Engel touched the wall with a time of 2:04.46.
“Marissa was just fantastic in her 200 backstroke,” Sorenson said. “We knew that this was her strong event and we were happy that she placed really well.”
Dani Harris, Bre Loeshke and Kristy Kunkel also contributed to the Cyclones in the event. Harris finished in tenth with a time of 2:05.71, Loeschke took 17th clocking in at 2:05.76 and Kunkel took 30th touching at 2:11.91. Engle, Harris and Kunkel all earned season-best times.
In the 100 freestyle event, Amanda Paulson found herself in the top-eight of an event final for the second time this weekend. Paulson finished in eighth with a time of 53.54. Katie Vollhaber took 15th with a time of 54.60.
The Cyclones saw great success in the 200 breaststroke event with Marley Suckow and Harris finishing in sixth and seventh-place, respectively. Suckow finished with a time of 2:22.84 and Harris touched the wall at 2:23.51, another season-best time.
“Dani Harris did a really nice job this weekend,” Sorenson said. “Although she didn't place as high, she really is starting to come around in her 200 backstroke and in the finals of her 200 breaststroke.”
The Cyclones also took 14th and 15th places in the 200 breaststroke with Emily Wiltsie and Imelda Wistey finishing with times of 2:24.80 and 2:25.63, respectively.
The Cyclones also took places 12 through 14 in the 200 butterfly. Tiana Wollin led Iowa State in the event with a time of 2:10.78. Shahar Silberman and Kunkel finished with times of 2:11.14 and 2:12.97 respectively.
To finish the weekend, the 400 freestyle relay team of Paulson, Vollhaber, Deis and Fossum finished in eighth-place with a time of 3:34.16. Also in the pool, the relay team of Sarah Norris, Hayley Krzeczowski, Carlberg and Kleiner took 11th with a time of 3:37.14.
