SORENSON MEDIA CONFERENCE
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving squad will travel to Columbia, Mo. this week to partake in the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships. The four-day event begins Wednesday night at 6 p.m. CST with the following three days featuring 10 a.m. prelim sessions and 6 p.m. finals sessions. All prelim sessions and the Wednesday session will be streamed live on big12sports.com. The finals sessions will be shown as part of a tape-delayed package on FSN next week.
Iowa State compiled a 5-3 dual meet record on the season. The highlight of the dual season was Iowa State's 158-142 victory over Big 12 rivals Kansas Feb. 3-4. It was the Cyclones' first Big 12 dual victory in nine years.
The Iowa State team travelling to this season's Big 12 Championships is a younger team, with 12 Cyclones preparing to make their Championships debut. Two of those newcomers,
Amanda Paulson and
Imelda Wistey, were tied for the team lead in event victories on the season with 22 apiece.
Paulson, a freshman from Monticello, Minn., has been a star in the sprint freestyle events. Paulson won the 50 freestyle in all eight dual meets and the prelims and finals session of the Northwestern TYR Invitational this season. She already ranks fourth in school history in the event with her season-best time of 23.06 from Iowa State's dual meet against Iowa in December. That time broke the Beyer Pool record which was previously held by Tammy Thomas of Kansas at the 1982 Big Eight Championships.
Wistey, a sophomore from West Des Moines, Iowa, has made her impact in the breaststroke races. She was an important facet to Iowa State's win over Kansas, winning all four events she was entered in. Wistey will be eager to get a chance at the championship-style format for the Cyclones, as she missed the invitational meet in November due to illness.
Another swimmer to watch will be sophomore
Emily Wiltsie. The Mason City, Iowa native broke the Iowa State school record in the 200 breaststroke against Iowa, finishing the race in an NCAA Consideration Qualifying Time of 2:15.31. Wiltsie scored for the Cyclones in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at last season's championships.
The Iowa State divers have been at or near their very best during the final stages of the season. Senior
Sarah Nelson swept the diving events in the Kansas dual meet and in the last month has recorded her two career-high scores on 1-meter. Sophomore
Jessica Henderson has been Iowa State's top performer on 3-meter this season, owner of the Cyclones' high score on the board (291.15 at South Dakota State on Oct. 29) and averaging over 285 points in the last month.
Iowa State will begin the meet with the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay on Wednesday.
