COLUMBIA, Mo. – Sarah Nelson recorded her second eighth-place finish of the Big 12 Championships to lead Iowa State on day four of the event at the Mizzou Aquatics Center. The Cyclones finished fifth in the team standings with 328 points. Texas A&M won its fourth Big 12 crown in six seasons with 1,019 points.
For the second season in a row, Nelson scored on all three boards at the Big 12 Championships and for the second day in a row, the senior made it to the 'A' final. Nelson was very strong in the prelims, making it into the finals with the second-best score of her career via a five-dive total of 236.55. In finals, Nelson finished eighth with a score of 233.45.
"I thought Sarah did great tonight," diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "I thought she was better minus her reverse one-and-a-half. I thought she did great; the other divers in the final dove better than the prelim session. Sarah was confident in herself on platform. She was steady and consistent."
Megan Cohea earned her first top-10 finish of her Big 12 Championships campaign with her 10th-place effort and career-high score of 192.75. Marley Dobyns finished 11th with 175.15 and Jessica Henderson rounded out the Iowa State contingent with a 12th-place finish at 172.45.
"I think our divers are going to leave this meet hungrier than when they came in," Warrick noted. "Our divers saw what they can do. Megan put up a great score; not many Iowa State divers had gone that high as a freshman. We are going to keep pressing forward."
Dani Harris posted her first-career top-10 individual finish at the Big 12 Championships with her 10th-place effort in the 200 back. After posting a 2:01.12 in the prelims, Harris came back in the evening with a faster 2:00.03. Bre Loeschke posted her best finish of the week with an 11th-place finish in 2:01.96 after posting a 2:04.56 in morning prelims.
"After prelims it was pretty rough for both Dani and Bre," Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. "They both came back with a little more aggression in the last half of their races."
Emily Wiltsie also posted a top-10 finish for the swimmers, taking second in the consolation heat to lock up 10th place in 2:17.06. Marley Suckow (12th, 2:18.24), Imelda Wistey (15th, 2:20.70) and Ali Stearns (16th, 2:23.98) all also got onto the scoreboard for the Cyclones in the event.
"Emily wanted to go faster in prelims and she rushed her stroke," Sorenson noted. "Unfortunately everything fell apart for her. She swam smarter in the final and with better technique. She was faster at night and it was good to see."
Iowa State got three to score in the 1650 free. Senior Meredith Doran wrapped up her Iowa State career with a 12th-place finish in 17:11.56. Kristy Kunkel got 14th in 17:59.21 and Alex Gustafson touched the wall in 15th with a time of 18:00.62.
Carissa Poeschel had a successful day in the 200 fly. The sophomore went the fastest time of her Iowa State career in prelims in 2:06.82 and then came back in finals and swam a quicker 2:05.84 to place 12th. Tiana Wollin posted back-to-back season-bests with her 2:07.99 in prelims, followed by a 2:07.71 in finals to place 15th.
"Carissa has really done a nice job this year," Sorenson said. "As the season went along, she was working harder in the pool and as a sophomore she understood what she had to do. She is getting back her old form, which is nice to see. It has been a struggle at times over the last couple of years. She had an opportunity and she took advantage of it."
Amanda Paulson scored in her third individual event of the weekend in the 100 free, taking 15th in 51.80. Katie Vollhaber got into the individual scoring column for the first time in her Iowa State career with her 16th-place finish in 52.68.
Iowa State closed out the meet with the team of Paulson, Britta Sortland, Vollhaber and Sarah Deis in the 400 free relay, with the group taking fifth in 3:29.06.
Iowa State's swimmers will continue their stay in Columbia with the Last Chance Meet tomorrow at 11 a.m. CST. Henderson and Nelson will compete at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in Iowa City, Iowa March 8-10.
