ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Iowa State's redshirt junior duo of Danielle Frere and Laishema Hampton have competed unattached at every meet during this indoor season. Last weekend's USA Indoor Track and Field Championships gave them one chance to compete for Iowa State this season and Frere took full advantage of the opportunity.
Frere finished fifth in the shot put competition with a school-record mark of 56-00.50. She was also the top collegiate finisher in the event. The previous school record in the indoor shot put was held by Heather Nelson, who recorded a mark of 55 feet, 2 inches in 1996.
Frere also competed in the weight throw competition at the USA Championships alongside Hampton. Hampton finished sixth with a mark of 63--04.25 while Frere recorded a seventh-place finish, throwing 61-03.00.
"You can see why we are so excited to get outdoors so they can compete for Iowa State," Grant Wall said. "We have redshirted them during this indoor season. It is obvious that they would make a difference in Big 12 competition."
Both student-athletes will be eligible to compete during this year's outdoor season.
