Cyclones Have Strong Finish to New Balance Invitational

NEW YORK – The Iowa State track and field teams concluded action Saturday at the New Balance Invitational inside the Armory with two runner-up performances and four new personal best marks.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team earned a second-place finish in the College Division of the 4x400-meter relay. The Cyclones also finished second in the fastest heat of the event, which included an impressive field of Connecticut, Georgtown, George Mason and Duke. The relay team put up a season-best time of 3:43.49.

Cyclone newcomer Ejiro Okoro was the runner-up in the College Division of the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:12.50. Okoro finished on the heels of Vermont's Yolanda Ngarambe, who clocked a time of 2:11.26.

Competition for the Iowa State men on day two of the New Balance Invitational was highlighted in the Cyclones' final event of the meet. Senior Rico Loy used a late-race kick to finish third in the Championship Division of the mile run. Loy clocked a personal-best time of 4:02.55.

Competing in her first collegiate mile run, Cyclone redshirt freshman Morgan Casey won the first heat in the event's Championship Division. Casey clocked a personal best time 4:52.48 to finish 14th overall in the event.

The Cyclones return home next weekend to host the annual Iowa State Classic Feb. 9-11 at the Lied Recreation Center.
