TEMPE, Ariz. - The Iowa State track and field team wasted no time posting strong marks in its first meet of the outdoor track and field season during the first day of the ASU Invitational Friday at the Sun Angel Stadium. Redshirt junior Laishema Hampton led the Cyclones finishing the hammer throw in second place behind Chelsea Cassulo who competed unattached.
On her fourth of six throws in the hammer throw competition, Hampton threw a personal best mark of 192 feet, 4 inches beating her old personal best of 179-06. Hampton's throw becomes the second-best mark on the Iowa State Women's Outdoor Track and Field All-Time Performers list.
The Cyclone men recorded two top-10 finishes in the hammer throw competition with redshirt junior Zack Richards finishing seventh and redshirt freshman Collin Fett taking ninth place. Richards' best throw of the competition came in his final throw of the afternoon where he threw a mark of 195-00. Fett recorded a best-mark of 182-09 on his first throw of the competition to finish ninth.
The ASU Invitational continues Saturday with the discus competiton scheduled for a 1 p.m. CST start time. Results will be posted on cyclones.com at the conclusion of the day's events.
