IRVING, Texas - Iowa State's Meaghan Nelson was named the Big 12 Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Nelson is the first Cyclone to receive the honor this season. This is the second time Nelson has earned this distinction in career. Her first time was this past cross country season. She is only the third female Cyclone to earn an outdoor track and field weekly honor in league history, joining Jessica Huff and Lisa Koll.
Nelson's time currently ranks her third on Iowa State's Outdoor Track and Field All-Time Performer's List. Last weekend at the Stanford Invitational, she was the race's third overall finisher. Near the front of the race pack from the beginning, Nelson took the lead of the 36-person field around the 2,000-meter mark and held onto it until the bell lap before relinquishing the No. 1 position. Nelson finished third overall in the 10,000-meter race. Former five-time Loyola-Marymount All-American Tara Erdman won the event in 32:31.15. Nelson curently holds the fifth-best time world wide this season in the 10,000-meter race.
