Cyclones Take First-Round Lead At Big 12 Championships

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The Iowa State women's golfers are the first-round leaders at the 2012 Big 12 Championships, firing a 311 this afternoon at the Lawrence Country Club in Lawrence, Kan. The Cyclones have a two-shot lead over Baylor. Oklahoma State is in third place, four strokes back.
The Cyclones got off to a great start, battling blustery winds which affected the field. Gusts of winds up to 35 miles per hour kept the scores higher than normal, but the Cyclones persevered to end the day atop the leader board.
“I am really happy with how we played today,” Iowa State women's golf coach Christie Martens said. “We have really talked about staying tough in bad conditions and finishing strong, and we did a great job of that today. It got super windy late in the round, and they kept their focus. You certainly didn't think 311 would be in the lead after the first round.”
A trio of Cyclones finished in the top 10, led by sophomore Sasikarn On-iam, who is tied for first place after carding a first-round 75. Prima Thammaraks and Punpaka Phuntumabamrung are currently tied for 10th place after carding a pair of 78s. Kristin Paulson shot an 80 and Chonlada Chayanun carded an 83 to round out the Cyclone scoring.
On-iam didn't have a birdie today, but she avoided the high numbers, tallying 13 pars and five bogeys in the tough conditions.
“She (On-iam) did a great job today,” Martens said. “It's her birthday today, so she will always remember this. She had a couple of bad holes early in the round and did a great job fighting back from it.”
Iowa State will play 18 holes tomorrow. The Cyclones will hit the course at 10:40 a.m. CT. The third and final round will take place Sunday.
