DES MOINES - Iowa State sprinter Ian Warner helped pace the Cyclone effort on Friday at the 103rd Drake Relays. Warner's efforts in the 4 x 100-meter relay and the prelims of the 100-meter dash in a Drake Stadium swept by wirling winds.
Iowa State's 4x1600-meter relay placed fourth with a time of 16:50.36. The quartet of sophomore Alex Dillenback (4:09), junior Daniel Gruber (4:07), freshman Alec Bolman (4:13) and sophomore Falko Zauber (4:19) finished behind Missouri (16:47.87), Arkansas (16:49.50) and Minnesota (16:50.07).
"It is hard to know who you are running against in this kind of meet," Zauber said. "We are in the midst of training and I was still recovering from last weekend. We are working to be at our best for the Big 12 meet."
Zauber ran 3:50.78 for 1,500-meters at Mt. Sac Relays on April 19. The following day he clocked a 3:51.23 at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Both meets were in California.
The men's 4 x 100-meter relay qualified for Saturday's final, placing second in its heat with a 40.64 clocking. The quartet of freshman Teddy Lampkin, freshman Nick Efkamp, sophomore Patrick Lewis and Warner, a junior, edged out Georgia, which also qualified in 40.65. Minnesota won the race in 40.63. It was Warner, who anchored for the Cyclones, that brought Iowa State home with a strong final leg.
Warner came back a couple hours later and qualified for Saturday's final of the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.49. Iowa State sprints coach Nate Wiens said Warner had a very good day."
"We have hammered at pushing all the way after the start and Ian was still accelerating to the finish," Wiens said. "On the relay, we had a uneasy final pass so Ian had to speed up, slow down and then accelerate again. He made up the ground, it was a monster leg."
Lampkin earned a personal best 24-4 ½ in the long jump to place fourth. Korbin Smith of Missouri, who fouled on five of his six attempts, won the meet with a best of 25-0 ¾.
"I am happy with Teddy's performance," Iowa State jumps coach Pete Herber said. "The conditions were not ideal with a swirling wind. Despite that, he was finding the board."
Former Iowa Stater Lance Elliott, who hails from Montezuma, won the Master's 800-meters in 2:01.88.
Iowa State's women's distance medley of freshman Maggie Gannon, sophomore Dana Christensen, junior Ejiro Okoro and freshman Morgan Casey placed sixth in 11:39.25. Illinois State won in 11:19.14. The Cyclone women's 4 x 400-meter of sophomore Krista Shoeman, junior Eseroghene Okoro, junior Donise Powell and senior Kianna Elahi qualified for Saturday's final by posting the seventh-fastest preliminary effort, in 3:40.33.
"We had a great effort in the 4 x 400," Wiens said. "We are ready to run fast. Not today. It was 60 degrees with strong swirling winds. In that environment we were about a second off. But it was a good performance for our team."
A select group of Iowa State athletes also competed at the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa.
Iowa State starts its final day at the Drake Relays tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the women's hammer throw.
