PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Iowa State track and field team tackled three different meets across the West Coast on Friday, setting over 15 personal-best marks throughout events at the Stanford Invitational, the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz. and the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
In her first collegiate 10,000-meter run, Iowa State's
Meaghan Nelson was the Stanford Invitational's fast section top-collegiate finisher in a time of 32:33.40. Nelson's time is also under the automatic qualifying standard of 32:45.00 for the U.S. Olympic Trials. The Olympic Trials are June 22-July 1 in Eugene, Ore.
"What can I say," Iowa State head coach
Corey Ihmels said. "The fastest debut time ever by a Cyclone. She deserved it, leading almost all the way, doing the hard work."
Nelson's time currently ranks her third on Iowa State's Outdoor Track and Field All-Time Performer's List. The Cyclone was the race's third overall finisher. Near the front of the race pack from the beginning, Nelson took the lead of the 36-person field around the 2,000-meter mark and held onto it until the bell lap before relinquishing the No. 1 position. Nelson finished third overall in the 10,000-meter race. Former five-time Loyola-Marymount All-American Tara Erdman won the event in 32:31.15.
Rico Loy highlighted Friday night's competition at the Stanford Invitational for the Cyclone men as he clocked a 13:40.03 in the fastest section of the 5,000-meter run. Loy improved on his previous personal-best time in the event by nearly one minute.
Martin Coolidge came up big in his first 10,000-meter run, clocking 29:08.87 to place 23rd, an excellent debut in a field full of post-collegians.
"Marty didn't feel very well all week, but tonight was all about who he is, always giving you his best effort," Ihmels said. "He has a major upside, his work ethic is exemplary."
At the Sun Angel Classic, the Cyclones were led by
Laishema Hampton who recorded a seventh-place finish in the premier section of the hammer throw. Hampton recorded a mark of 190-02, just inches shy of her personal best mark. Teammates
Danielle Frere,
Tressa Borchardt and Collin Fett all recorded personal-best marks in the hammer throw.
The Cyclones continue both meets Saturday with action at the Sun Angel Classic beginning at noon CDT. Competition for Iowa State at the Stanford Invitational resumes at 3:30 CDT.
