AMES, Iowa - Iowa State's track and field teams want to be noticed. The Cyclone men and women will be looking to make a splash at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday through Sunday at the R.V. Christian Track in Manhattan, Kan. The events start Friday with the decathlon and heptathlon at noon. Action begins Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
"We will have a lot of talent out there, no question," Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. "Indoors we placed in a lot of events. I would like to see us win some of those events this weekend."
Iowa State's women's program is ranked among the nation's top programs after finishing seventh at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships and 10th at the NCAA indoor meet. Its fourth-place team finish at the Big 12 indoor meet was the program's best since 2000.
The Iowa State men are paced by Big 12 indoor mile champion Rico Loy. The Cyclones, who scored in 12 events indoors, will also have Ian Warner in the sprints. He placed third in the 60-meter dash indoors. Teddy Lampkin and Akeem Holmes will represent Iowa State in the jumps along with several throwers.
"Rico has a tough road ahead to win another conference title," Ihmels said. " As a whole, we scored in a lot of different events indoors, but I think we missed in some areas as well. We have some guys that are coming around in time, and hopefully we can put some things together this weekend."
Ihmels latest unheralded prep distance runners are succeeding beyond their wildest dreams. Dani Stack may be asked to double up this weekend in the pursuit of points. Times and marks are not important conference weekend. What matters are points from placing.
"This is a meet like no other," Ihmels said. "A lot of the athletes are excited about the prospect of being able to score points and do something for your team, and that's really what it boils down to. On the women's side, we've got some young ladies that have done some really good things for the past two weeks, so we're going to ask a lot out of them this weekend again. We're just going to play it day by day with them and see what we can do, and put people in places where they can be successful."
Danielle Frere has enjoyed a solid spring and will lead the throwing group. Kianna Elahi, the 2010 Big 12 400-meter hurdle champion and 2012 Drake Relays champion in that event will tandem with Ese Okoro, who was second at Drake in that event.
"I look back to the Drake Relays where we went one-two in the 400 hurdles," Ihmels said. "That doesn't happen every year. I think Kianna has been a leader ever since she's been here, and Ese has followed suit. We can use these ladies in a lot of different places, and we're going to expect big things out of them as well. Danielle (Frere) has been firing on all cylinders. The 4x400 keeps getting better and better every week. It's always fun to end a meet on a high note, so we look forward to that race. We want to keep lowering our school record and see if we can't get in the mix there."
