MEN'S QUALIFIERS | WOMEN'S QUALIFIERS
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's track and field teams were granted 25 entries into the NCAA West Regional it was announced Thursday. The Cyclone women saw 12 student-athletes invited in seven events, while the men will send 11 student-athletes in 10 different events. The NCAA West Regional takes place May 24-26 in Austin, Texas with the Cyclones competing for spots in the NCAA Championships, June 6-9 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
No team will be as well-represented in the women's 400-meter hurdles as the Cyclones. Iowa State saw four of its student-athletes make the top-48 cut. The group is led by Kianna Elahi, seeded fourth among the qualifiers with her 56.41 from the finals of the Big 12 Championships. Elahi is joined by Ese Okoro (12th), Donnise Powell (35th) and Krista Shoeman (40th).
Meaghan Nelson and Dani Stack both earned high seeds for the women's 10,000-meter run with Nelson coming in second with her 32:14.27 from the Payton Jordan Invitational on April 29, and Stack seventh with her time of 32:51.28 from the same meet.
The Iowa State women's throwers have multiple entries in different events as Hayli Bozarth, Danielle Frere and Laishema Hampton all qualified in the hammer throw, and Bozarth and Frere also made the regional in the shot put.
Other women's qualifiers included Eji Okoro in the 800-meter run, Katie Moen in the 5,000-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay team of Dana Christensen, Ese Okoro, Elahi and Eji Okoro.
Ian Warner leads the Iowa State men's qualifiers with three entries in the regional. Warner is among the top seeds in the 100-meter dash, positioned in fourth with his 10.13(w) from the Big 12 Championships finals. Warner is also entered in the 200-meter dash and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team with Teddy Lampkin, Nick Efkamp and Patrick Lewis.
Lampkin will be serving double duty as he was a qualifier in the long jump.
Cameron Ostrowski and Derek Alderks both qualified for the regional in the high jump. Ostrowski has had a huge debut season for the Cyclones with his jump of 7-2 ½ at the Beach Invitational in April being tied for third in school history, making him the fifth seed for the regional. Alderk's 6-11 effort at the Big 12 Championships earned him the 48th and final qualifying slot in the event.
Other Iowa State men's qualifiers included Big 12 Champion Edward Kemboi in the 800-meter run, Big 12 indoor mile champion Rico Loy in the 5,000-meter run, Marty Coolidge in the 10,000-meter run, Akeem Holmes in the triple jump and Zack Richards in the hammer throw.
