AMES, Iowa- Iowa State head women's golf coach Christie Martens has elevated the Cyclone golf program into one of the finest in the Midwest. NCAA Regional appearances and upper-half finishes in the rugged Big 12 Conference have become the norm.
But don't expect Martens and her squad to rest on their laurels. They want more.
With three-straight NCAA Regional appearances, the Cyclones have come extremely close to advancing to the NCAA finals in all three campaigns. Iowa State returns four of five starters for 2012-13 and Martens is confident this could be the year the Cyclones breakthrough.
Experience won't be an issue for the Cyclones. Iowa State has the luxury of returning three All-Big 12 players in senior Punpaka Phuntumabamrung and juniors Sasikarn On-iam and Prima Thammaraks. All three have consistently proven their ability to shoot low scores.
Phuntumabamrung was at her best in the second half of last season, placing in the top-10 in three of her last four tournaments. She made the Big 12 All-Tournament team in 2012 after tying for eighth at the Big 12 Championships.
On-iam and Thammaraks were both All-Big 12 performers as freshmen in 2011. They continued their outstanding play last season, combining for five top-10 showings. The Cyclones also bring back sophomore Chonlada Chayanun, who competed in all 12 tournaments as a true freshman last year.
The fifth spot will likely be filled by sophomore Beth Wagner, who competed in three tournaments last season, or true freshman Cajsa Persson. Persson comes to Ames after a stellar prep career in Sweden.
It's an exciting time for Iowa State women's golf. A brand new state-of-the-art performance facility will debut this season, offering the program one of the finest facilities of its kind nationally.
The Cyclones will hit the links for the first time this season, Sept. 17-18 at the Dick McGuire/Branch Law Firm Invitational.
