Iowa State Captures Dick McGuire Invite Title

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Iowa State women's golf team opened its 2012-13 campaign with a victory at the Dick McGuire Invitational Tuesday afternoon in Albuquerque, N.M. The Cyclones, who were in third place heading into the final round, charged ahead with a 295 this afternoon for a one-shot victory over UC Davis, UNLV and Ohio State.

Iowa State, which shot a three-round 886 total (295-296-296), won its first tournament title since capturing three tournament championships during its record-setting 2010-11 season. ISU's 886 tally is the 11th-best 54-hole score in school history.

"This is a great way to start the season and a big win for our program," Iowa State head coach Christie Martens said. "Everybody played well and contributed. It came down to the final holes and it's a great reminder to our team how every shot counts."

Iowa State received an auspicious debut from true freshman Cajsa Persson, who shot three-straight rounds of 73 to tie for sixth (219) in her first collegiate competition.

"Cajsa was very consistent and showed a lot of maturity as a freshman," Martens added. "She played great and we are really proud of her."

Senior Punpaka Phuntumabamrung carded a final-round 71 to jump into a tie for 19th place at 222. Phuntumabamrung had rounds of 77-74-71. Juniors Prima Thammaraks and Sasikarn On-iam both tallied a 225 to tie for 28th place. Thammaraks struggled on the front nine, but bounced back by going 1-under on the back nine, including a clutch birdie on No. 18.

The Cyclones will be back in action on Oct. 1 at the Windy City Collegiate Classic in Glenview, Ill.
