LAWRENCE, Kan.- The Iowa State Cyclones finished day one of its two-day dual meet against Big 12 rival Kansas, trailing 44-106.

“I was very disappointed in our performance tonight,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. "I thought we were ready to swim and we just didn't not stand up and take advantage of the opportunity."

The Cyclones had a single event victory, winning the 50 freestyle with Amanda Paulson finishing with a time of 23.49.

Imelda Wistey finished in second-place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.64.

“We need to swim like we have been training in practice day-after-day and be good competitors like Amanda and Imelda,” Sorenson said. “They both did a really good job and swam hard.”

To start the evening off, the Cyclones finished in second-place in the 200 medley relay event. The team of Sarah Norris, Wistey, Kaylee Kucera and Paulson finished with a time of 1:45.99.

In the 200 freestyle event, Kristy Kunkel led the Cyclones with a third-place finish, clocking in with a time of 1:55.29. Sarah Deis took fourth and Bri Carlberg took sixth with times of 1:55.31 and 1:57.21, respectively.

The Cyclones took third through fifth place in the 100 backstroke event. Senior Dani Harris finished third with a time of 58.59. Bre Loeschke and Noris finished with times of 58.66 and 59.06, respectively.

“We have a lot of people who are trying to race hard, but not swimming smart,” said Sorenson. “It's another day tomorrow and hopefully we will put another performance together.”

In the diving well, the Cyclones were led by Elyse Brouillette.

“Overall I was happy with today's results,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “I think with the final and prelim format we got out of it what we wanted. We learned some things that we can apply tomorrow.”

The freshman Brouillette finished with a score of 306.98 on the 3-meter board, a personal best and the fourth-best score in Cyclone history.

“I was very pleased with Elyse's personal best score,” said Warrick.

Marley Dobyns and Megan Cohea took fifth and sixth with scores of 255.75 and 216.30, respectively.

Iowa State will wrap up its dual meet Saturday at the Robinson Natatorium with events beginning at 10 a.m. CST.
