AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's ninth-place team finish last weekend at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. affirms the Cyclones' emergence as a consistent front runner among the nation's best collegiate cross country and track and field programs. Underscoring Iowa State's place nationally is the different ways the Cyclones have maintained their national status. This program under head coach Corey Ihmels is no one hit wonder. Last weekend was just the turn of the latest page.
Betsy Saina is the latest star in Iowa State's decorated tradition of world-class distance runners under Ihmels' watch. Saina placed in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter races Friday and Saturday. Saina, a nine-time All-American, is the latest standard bearer of Iowa State's track and field tradition. Iowa State's newest star is sophomore Christina Hillman. The Delaware native placed second in the shot put Saturday. In addition, Ejiro Okoro earned All-America honors for the first time, in the 800-meter run.
"This started with Lisa Uhl in 2010," Ihmels said of his Olympian pupil. "To sustain the kind of success that makes you a nationally regarded program, it is going to take more than one person. We have steadily worked to broaden our base as a program. When you have a someone like Betsy, who has won a couple NCAA titles and then add a thrower and a middle distance runner, you have a foundation to build on. In track and field and cross country you get a trophy to finish in the top four and that is the next step."
The Cyclones have finished eighth, seventh and 11th over the past three seasons at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Iowa State has produced All-Americans in in Lisa Koll, Alphine Tuliamuk, Saina, Meaghan Nelson and Dani Stack. Saina is the defending NCAA cross country champion. Iowa State's run has included two straight Big 12 women's cross country team titles.
In 2010, Iowa State placed eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In 2012, the Cyclones were 10th at the NCAA indoor meet.
There is more to come.
