AMES, Iowa – The 2014-15 Iowa State swimming and diving season is set to kick off tomorrow with the annual intrasquad meet at Beyer Hall. The Cyclones will take the pool at 6 p.m., and admission is free.
The roster will be divided and teammates pitted against each other in a friendly cardinal vs. gold matchup. The gold team will have a clear edge on the boards with team captain and two-time ISU Most Valuable Diver (2012-13, 2013-14) Elyse Brouillette, but school record holder in the 50 freestyle, Amanda Paulson, will look to lock down her signature event for the cardinal squad.
Karyl Clarete is expected to set the pace in the middle distance freestyle events for the gold team, while cardinal swimmers Ali Stearns and Sarah Deis are returning some of the fastest times for Iowa State in breaststroke and IM events, respectively, from last season. Seniors Bre Loeschke (cardinal) and Marissa Engel (gold) will go head-to-head in the backstroke events, as they collectively owned the fastest 100 and 200 backstroke times for Iowa State last year.
Coming off one of the best seasons in program history in 2013-14, head coach Duane Sorenson expects tomorrow's action to pick up right where his team left it in March.
“Over the summer, everybody did a really good job of training and keeping themselves in shape,” Sorenson said. “A number of our athletes improved quite a bit, picked up where they left off and are moving forward.”
The Cyclones will have two weeks off following the intrasquad meet as they host South Dakota State on Oct. 17. Iowa State routed the Jack Rabbits on the road last year, 183-112.
