AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team hosted their annual cardinal vs. gold intrasquad meet on Friday night at Beyer Hall. The cardinal team jumped out to an early 45-29 lead heading into the first diving break and held the momentum to take the win over the gold team, 114-107.
Sarah Deis and Mary Kate Luddy took first and second with times of 2:08.62 and 2:09.80, respectively, in the 200 IM for the cardinal team, but it was all gold on the boards as team captain Elyse Brouillette swept bothevents in the diving well.
“I was very pleased with how they all did, and Elyse performed really well,” head diving coach Jeff Warrick Said. “I always wonder how freshmen will do in their first meet; Sydney was a little nervous, but she ended up doing really well."
Maddie Rastall (0:54.56) out-touched Amanda Paulson (0:54.61) in an exciting 100 freestyle finish for the gold team. Karyl Clarete took Deis to the wire in the 200 freestyle, but it was the senior captain who outpaced Clarete with a time of 1:55.84.
“Maddie just swam a great race and was really disciplined in that last 25. What we're seeing is just a year of experience and training behind her,” assistant swimming coach Kelly Nordell said. “Sarah and Karyl had a great race, but Sarah outperformed Karyl on the turns.”
Tonight was the first opportunity to see the incoming freshmen in a live meet environment, and the Iowa State coaching staff was encouraged by what saw. According to Nordell, there's still some work ahead, but a two-week layoff between now and their first meet of the season will provide an opportunity to tie up loose ends.
“The freshmen looked good, but there are definitely some things that we need to clean up, not only strategically but in their strokes as well,”Nordell said. “We're excited to compete in our first official meet in two weeks as we move forward, but we have some technical work left to do.”
The Cyclones are set to host South Dakota State on Friday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. at Beyer Hall. Last season, Iowa State routed the Jack Rabbits on the road, 183-112.
