10.30.2014 | Swimming and Diving
AMES, Iowa – North Dakota (6-1, 2-0 Big Sky) and Nebraska-Omaha (0-5, 0-1 Summit) will clash with the Iowa State swimming and diving team (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 at Beyer Hall in a double dual meet. The Cyclones are a combined 17-0 all-time against the UND and UNO.
Friday's meeting marks the first matchup between North Dakota and Iowa State since the 2000-01 season, when the Cyclones took a 96-point win over UND. Last year, ISU took seven out of 10 events in Omaha, Nebraska en route to a 123-63 win over the Mavericks, improving to 12 consecutive dual meet wins over UNO since the 2001-02 season.
Iowa State's coaching staff does not expect history to play a factor in the outcome of Friday's meet, however. It will take a strong performance to keep the Cyclones' perfect records against UND and UNO in tact, according to head coach Duane Sorenson.
“UNO has a couple of really good swimmers, one who we recruited, Natalie Renshaw. She has been outstanding so far this season,” Sorenson said. “UND has one of the strongest teams in their school history. If we go through the motions, they will take us out. We're expecting a great meet out of them and a lot of close races.”
With a pair of wins, the Cyclones would improve to 4-1, their best start since the 2010-11 season when ISU went 5-1 throughout their first six dual meets on the year. A team led by experience and loaded with young talent, Iowa State looks for another standout performance from their freshman class.
“We're just going to put together a lineup and ask our women to go out and race and compete,” Sorenson said. “It doesn't matter which heat they're in, they have to race the competition and the clock.”
In the diving well, Iowa State team captain Elyse Brouillette will have the edge on both boards, with season best scores of 308.68 and 285.95 in the three and one-meter events, respectively. According to head diving coach Jeff Warrick, Brouillette is ahead of her own pace at this point last year.
“Elyse definitely has the ability to win both boards, but nothing is ever given,” head diving coach Jeff Warrick said of Brouillette. “The North Dakota and UNO divers will be right there. They aren't going to hand any victories over to us.”
