AMES, Iowa – The Cyclone divers will be on the road for the Iowa Invitational on Friday, Dec. 7 through Sunday, Dec. 9. A total of eight women's programs including Denver, Iowa, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, Ohio State, Washington State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee will clash in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City, Iowa.
“The Iowa Invite is one of our two biggest events before the Big 12 Championships – this one and the Tennessee Diving Invite,” Iowa State head diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “This is our first test of a three-day event with lots of divers, so we will see how we handle that mentally.”
This weekend's championship style event will be the first live action Warrick's squad has seen since sweeping the boards on Friday, Nov. 7 during Iowa State's conference opener at TCU. Team captain Elyse Brouillette expects the layoff to be an advantage for the Cyclones.
“I have started to work on new dives, tougher dives which will earn me higher scores with higher degrees of difficulty,” Brouillette said. “It's been good to have time to throw in new dives, and I think we are all looking strong.”
Brouillette also said her teammates Julie Dickinson and Sydney Ronald have been working to add a reverse two-and-a-half to their rotations.
With a zone qualifying score now on her resume, Dickinson has answered the bell during her sophomore year in the absence of one-meter school record holder Jessica Henderson, who graduated after the 2013-14 season.
“I feel more comfortable going into the event this year than I did last year,” Dickinson said. “We are going in with a different mindset this year, and we all expect to do well, especially for our first championship style meet of the year.”
The team's mindset, according to Warrick, is the key to success this weekend. Warrick is focused on creating a loose, relaxed environment for his divers, and he expects the high scores to follow.
“The first thing they have to do is just go in there with a positive outlook and excitement to be at the meet,” Warrick said. “As a group, they need to go into the competition not too uptight, not too nervous, which will lead to the good performances.”
