MANIKAN-SABOT, Va.- Iowa State sophomore Nick Voke carded a final-round 71 this afternoon to win his first career tournament title and claim medalist honors at the VCU Shootout with a three-day 213 (3-under) total.
Voke's title helped the Cyclones finish second in the team standings, as ISU shot a 282 (6-under) in the final round this afternoon, four shots better than any other team in the field on the last day. Virginia Tech was the team champion at 865, six shots ahead of Iowa State (871).
Voke, who hails from Auckland, New Zealand, held a one-shot lead heading into the final round. His lead grew to as many has four strokes during the round thanks to an eagle on the par-4 sixth hole. Virginia Tech's Maclain Huge closed the gap on Voke, tying the Cyclone at 3-under with a hole left. However, Huge bogeyed his last hole and Voke picked up ISU's third VCU Shootout individual title in the last five years: Nate McCoy (2010) and Scott Fernandez (2011). It was Voke's fifth career top-10 finish.
It marked the sixth time a Cyclone has won a tournament in the last five years: McCoy (3), Fernandez (2), Voke (1).
Fernandez made major move on the final day, carding a 4-under 68 this afternoon to tie for seventh at 218. Fernandez, who had five birdies and an eagle on his card today, increased his school record career top-10 finish total to 22.
Ruben Sondjaja finished just outside the top 10 in 15th place at 220 and Sam Daley tied for 29th at 225.
Iowa State is back in action at the Badger Invitational Sept. 28-30.
