Fernandez Claims Third Career Title at Badger Invite

MADISON, Wis. – Iowa State senior golfer Scott Fernandez fired a final-round 66 to earn medalist honors at the Badger Invitational this afternoon. Fernandez helped rally the Cyclone men's golfers into a second-place finish in the tournament (872), as Iowa State was in sixth place and 14 shots out of the lead heading into the final round.

ISU fell just one shot behind team champion Sam Houston State (871). The Cyclones were 6-under as a team this afternoon (282), 10 shots better than any other team in the field for the final round.

Fernandez was sensational today. The senior All-American had six birdies and 12 pars on his card en route to his third career tournament title (2011- VCU Shootout; 2013- Furman Invite). He was eight shots out of the lead heading into this afternoon's final 18 holes. He made up ground quick by going 4-under through the first nine holes, including birdies on holes 7, 8 and 9.

Fernandez, who increased his career school record top-10 finish total to 23, is the second Cyclone to win medalist honors in the first two tournaments. Nick Voke won the VCU Shootout last week. The Cyclones were also runners-up as a team at the VCU Shootout.

Sophomore Ruben Sondjaja posted his fifth career top-10 finish by tying for fifth at 217. Sondjaja fired rounds of 71-73-73=217. Senior Sam Daley made a move on the last day with 2-under 70, catapulting him up to 15th place at 221. Voke was one shot back at 222 to tie for 16th.

ISU is back in action at the David Toms Invitational, Oct. 4-5.
