AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (5-3, 1-0 Big 12) will welcome in-state foe Northern Iowa (3-2, 0-1 Missouri Valley) and conference opponent West Virginia (0-4, 0-1 Big 12) at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 and 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, respectively, in Beyer Hall.
This weekend, eight ISU seniors will be recognized during their final home dual meet at Iowa State.
The Cyclones have built an impressive resume against the Panthers, holding the all-time series lead, 22-1, including 20 consecutive wins. When the two teams square off again, it will have been 8,400 days since UNI's last victory over ISU, but the Iowa State coaching staff does not plan to look past Northern Iowa.
“They are going to come with their A-game,” Iowa State diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “I know they're hungry, and they're trying to keep moving up, so we can't overlook anybody.”
Iowa State and West Virginia will meet for the just second time in dual meet action on Saturday, with the Cyclones claiming a decisive victory over the Mountaineers in their first clash last season, 200-93.
“Like any Big 12 competition, it's going to be tough, it's going to be tight and it could come down to the wire,” Warrick said. “They are going to be our big competition – along with some other teams – at the Big 12 Conference Championships. I don't necessarily think that if one team wins over another in this dual meet, it means they're winning at Big 12s. It's a totally difference situation down there, but we obviously want that win.”
