AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team (6-10-0, 0-5-0 Big 12) fell to Oklahoma State (8-6-2, 1-2-2 Big 12) by a score of 1-0 at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cowgirls outshot the Cyclones by a 24-13 margin.
After 45 minutes of action, the game remained scoreless. OSU held a steep advantage over the Cyclones offensively at the break. The Cowgirls outshot Iowa State 12-6 in the first half and put five attempts on goal. ISU did not tally a shot on target in the first half.
The second half carried the same pattern as the first. The Iowa State offense was only able to produce seven shots in the after the intermission and two on target.
The Cowgirls broke the tie in the 68th minute. Off of a Kelsey Bass corner kick, the ball was deflected to Allie Stephenson. She put a nice touch on the ball to shake free of a Cyclone defender and took a rip from 17 yards that found the back of the net. The one goal advantage would be the difference in the game.
Turning Point of the Game
Allie Stephenson's goal. Up until the 68th minute, the Cyclones had been able to withstand the Cowgirls high shot-producing offense. Off of the corner kick, the ball bounced to Allie Stephenson and she was able to finally break the tie and knock in the game-winning goal.
Coach Said It
“Our offense wasn't consistent. In the last 20 minutes, we were pressing them, we were all over them and felt a sense of urgency. We didn't have that sense of urgency 25 minutes of the half. It really came down to who was going to make the mistake and capitalize on the mistake. We made a mistake right in front of our box, we didn't clear the ball and they capitalized on it. Moving forward, it's a mentality thing. We have to make sure we're taking the field and playing consistent for 90 minutes, which has been a problem all year.”
