AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team held its annual intrasquad meet to mark the start of the 2015-16 season Friday night at Beyer Pool. The meet featured the team roster split into two squads going head-to-head, with the Gold team edging out the Cardinal team, 112-105.
The Gold team jumped ahead early, claiming victory in the 200 medley relay to open the night. Momentum began to build for the Gold team, which compiled a 41-33 lead heading into the first diving break.
Julie Dickinson did her best to try to spark a Cardinal team rally, taking the one-meter diving with a score of 144.60, followed by team captain Elyse Brouillette with a mark of 132.60. ISU alumna Jess Henderson, who competed as a part of the alumnae meet, took third place, scoring 126.15 on the event.
“There are some things we have to work on, no question about it, but it's early in the season and that's kind of what I expect a little bit,” said diving coach Jeff Warrick. “I thought Julie dove really well tonight and I saw some good things from Elyse, too. Sydney [Ronald] and Maggie [James], they're doing really well. I was really pleased with how they did.”
The Gold team didn't look back, going on to claim first place in four of the last five events. Freshman Guy Shilon set the pace in the 100 backstroke, clocking in with a time of 57.39 seconds – a time that would put her in Iowa State's all-time top 20 in the event.
Dickinson again emerged victorious in the diving well on the three-meter board, tallying a score of 145.60 to help pull the cardinal team within two points heading into the final event of the night. The Gold team held strong, however, taking the 200 freestyle relay to secure the victory.
“I liked the way that we raced – we were very competitive with each other,” said head coach Duane Sorenson. “Our leaders of the team really stood up and went after it. We just have to focus on ourselves and really kind of fine tune the little things to get ready for next week.”
The Iowa State swimming and diving team opens its regular season with a trip to Lincoln, Nebraska to the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Oct. 9. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m.
