AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's golf team wrapped up its fall competition by earning a No. 17 national ranking by Golfweek.
The Cyclones competed in four fall tournaments against the nation's best teams. Their top showing was a third-place finish at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate, tying the school record for low 54-hole team score of 857. ISU's second-round 277 at the tournament fell just one stroke shy of its 18-hole school mark.
Three Cyclones ended the fall portion of the season ranked in the top-150, including sophomore
Celia Barquin, who is at No. 46 in the Golfweek individual rankings.
Barquin had a fantastic start to her sophomore season after breaking ISU's freshman scoring mark (73.33) a year ago. She placed in the top-10 in three of four tournaments and leads the team in stroke average at 72.42.
Barquin's career 73.09 scoring average is currently the best in school history.
A pair of true freshmen were also instrumental in ISU's success in the fall in
Parinda Phokan and
Chayanit Wangmahaporn.
Phokan, who is ranked 77th nationally, is second on the team in stroke average at 72.83. She tied for ninth at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate at 216 and tied for 14th at the Windy City Collegiate at 214.
Wangmahaporn is ranked 113th nationally and is third on the team in streak average at 73.33. She posted her first career top-10 at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate (T7th) and leads the team in sub-70 rounds with two.
Iowa State returns to the links on Feb. 7-9 at the Central Florida Challenge.
