AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's golf team is off to a fantastic start to the 2015-16 season, and the latest Golfweek rankings confirms this.
The Cyclones are ranked No. 15 in the nation in this week's Golfweek poll, the second-highest-ranked team in the Big 12 Conference (Oklahoma State is No. 10).
ISU annually plays one of the toughest schedules in the country and this year is no exception. ISU has placed fourth or better in two of three tournaments, including tying for fourth at the Dick McGuire Invitational, a competitive field which featured eight teams ranked in the nation's top-30.
Three Cyclones are ranked in the nation's top-100 in the Golfweek individual rankings, led by sophomore
Celia Barquin at No. 34. Barquin, who has a team-best 71.3 stroke average, has placed in the top-10 in all three fall events for the Cyclones this year. She's finished in the top-10 in eight of her 14 career tournaments.
True freshmen
Parinda Phokan (No. 81) and
Chayanit Wangmahaporn (No. 86) are also ranked in the top-100. Phokan has a 72.7 stroke average and one top-10 finish, while Wangmahaporn is averaging 72.8 strokes per with one top-10 showing.
ISU closes out its fall schedule at the Stanford Intercollegiate, Oct. 18-20.
