AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team fell to Iowa in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series Dec. 11 at Beyer Pool, 198-101. With Iowa's victory, the Hawkeyes now hold a 12-6 lead in the 2015 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.
Iowa State now holds a 3-2 (1-0 Big 12) record on the year, while Iowa improved to 4-2 (1-2 Big Ten) this season.
The Iowa State 'A' squad in the 200 medley relay started the night strong for the Cyclones, clocking in at 1:41.96 for the 10th-best time in school history. With its time, the group of Harper Emswiler, Kasey Roberts, Kaylee Kucera and Alex Flatness became the sixth-fastest 200 medley relay squad in school history.
Freshman Haley Ruegemer followed it up with her career debut in the 1000 freestyle, finishing in a time of 10:16.37. The finish put Ruegemer at No. 11 on Iowa State's All-Time Top Performers list and within one second of cracking the top-10.
Junior Silqi Luo, who set a pair of personal records in the 200 freestyle at the Big Challenge in November, barely missed out on setting a career-best for the third-consecutive time swimming the event. Luo touched in 1:50.29, just .02 seconds off her record.
In the 200 butterfly, sophomore Mary Kate Luddy took second place with a time of 2:01.46, the fifth-best time in Iowa State history. Luddy, who owns the school record, now has four of the top-16 marks in school history.
Despite the notable Cyclone performances early on, Iowa earned a 90-41 advantage heading into the first diving break.
On the three-meter board, reigning Big 12 Diver of the Week Elyse Brouillette took first place with a score of 312.83, upping her season-high by more than 33 points. Junior Julie Dickinson and freshman Maggie James also topped their previous season-best marks with scores of 283.50 and 241.20, respectfully.
“I was really happy that they had such a good start,” said diving coach Jeff Warrick. “Sometimes in the past that has been our [setback] and almost we have to recover. Having a good start was great to see.”
After the first trip to the diving well, Roberts, a sophomore, clocked in at 2:15.37 in the 200 breaststroke, the fifth-best mark in school history. She now owns three of Iowa State's top-five all-time finishes in the events, including the top-two spots.
“They're always just such great racers. They are always ready for great competition and that's what we asked our team to do is go out and race,” head coach Duane Sorenson said of Roberts' and Luddy's night. “We had some really good swims and some swims where the Iowa women out-touched us so we just have to get a little bit tougher that last length and be a little more aggressive coming home.”
Ruegemer, typically a backstroke and IM swimmer, continued to make waves in freestyle events, swimming the 500 freestyle in 5:03.11 to finish third on the night and set a new career record.
In the diving well on the one-meter board, James led the Cyclones with a career-best score of 270.07. Brouillette and Dickinson followed closely, totaling 267.22 points and 266.17 points on the event, respectively. Junior Becky Stochl made her season debut for Iowa State, earning a mark of 173.03 in an exhibition performance.
“That was her best by far,” Warrick said of James' performance on the one-meter board. “It was a personal best by a long shot and she did a great job as a freshman.”
Roberts again stood out in the 200 IM, finishing with a time of 2:03.11 to top the previous Beyer Pool record by .55 seconds. Roberts, however, took second place in the event to Iowa's Emma Sougstad, who now holds the distinction.
“We do that every day in practice,” Sorenson said of improving down the stretch of races. “On every repeat you've got to finish off strong and when we're doing race-pace work in practice they've got to know it's going to hurt… but that's just what you have to do in our sport.”
Up next for the Iowa State divers is a trip to Athens, Georgia, Jan. 1-7 for the Georgia Diving Invitational. The Iowa State swimmers will take their annual Winter Training trip from Jan. 2-9, this year going to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a week of training and camaraderie.
The Iowa State swimming and diving team as a whole returns to competition Jan. 15, 2016, to host Illinois. That meet is slated for a 4 p.m. start at Beyer Pool in Ames, Iowa.
