AMES, Iowa – The 24th-annual Iowa State Classic wrapped up, Saturday, with an action-packed day two on the Harry Hoak Track in the Lied Athletics and Recreational Center. Some of the fastest runners in NCAA Division I were on display as numerous top national times were set and multiple meet records were broken in the distance and middle-distance events.
Iowa State senior Ed Kemboi stole the spotlight during the 800-meter run, clocking the nation's top-time of 1:46.09. The Kenya native out-paced a deep and talented feed that featured six times under the 1:48-barrier.
On the women's side, Bethany Praska (Unattached, 2:03.17) and Olicia Williams (Baylor, 2:03.21) tackled the ISU Classic and Harry Hoak Track record, set by Phoebe Wright (Nike) during last year's Classic with a time of 2:03.39.
In the women's mile, Heather Wilson of the New York-New Jersey Track Club and Angel Piccirillo of Villanova crossed the finish line under the track record of 4:34.54 set by Iowa State's Betsy Saina in 2010. Wilson and Piccirillo posted times of 4:33.75 and 4:34.28, respectively.
A total of eight runners on the men's side clocked sub-four minute miles, led by Chad Noelle of Oklahoma, breaking the tape in the nation's fourth-best time of 3:57.78. Iowa State's Patrick Peterson (4:02.17) and Brian Biekert (4:02.39) now hold 9th and 10th-place, respectively, on the Iowa State indoor all-time top-performers list.
North Dakota State's Erin Teschuk posted a national best time of 9:02.40 in the 3000-meter run, setting the ISU Classic meet record in the process – Stephanie Garcia of Furman Elite set the previous record during last year's Classic. Including Iowa State's Kate Moen, who now sits 12th nationally, four of the country's top-15 times in the 3000-meter run were clocked.
Kendra White bettered her own indoor school record in the 400-meter dash for the Cyclones, posting a time of 53.81.
The Iowa State jumpers put on a clinic, as freshman Jhoanmy Luque and redshirt-senior Cameron Ostrowski notched first and second-place performances in the triple and high jump, respectively. Luque's mark of 41' 8.75" (12.72m) moves her to No. 27 in the nation, while Ostrowski's leap of 7' 3.00" (2.21m) tied him for 7th nationally. Both athletes remained 2nd on Iowa State's indoor all-time top-performers list in their respective events.
