AMES, Iowa—The Iowa State men's and women's track and field teams are set for this weekend's Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet will be held at the Cyclones' home Harry Hoak Track in the Lied Recreation Athletic Center.
The Cyclones have eight different athletes nationally ranked in the top-25 in the respective events, including a first-place rank in the 800-meter run by senior Edward Kemboi. Iowa State men's squad has two distance medley teams in the top-25 nationally and the women's distance medley team comes into the meet ranked 21st.
Looking to defend his 2014 Big 12 Indoor title, is three-time All-American Kemboi in the 800-meter run. The Eldoret, Kenya native posted the nation's fastest time of 1:46.09 earlier this season at the Iowa State Classic. Kemboi defeated four other athletes with top-10 times nationally on his home track. Kemboi is also part of the men's distance medley squad that shattered the school record with a time of 9:31.85 last weekend at the Alex Wilson Invitational.
Senior Cameron Ostrowski also seeks to defend his Big 12 Indoor title in the high jump. Ostrowski is coming off a 2014 season that saw him take both the Big 12 Championship Indoor and Outdoor season titles in the high jump. The Burlington, Ill. native has gotten off to a hot start in the 2015 indoor season, posting the seventh-best mark in the country in the event at the Iowa State Classic.
Iowa native Taylor Sanderson posted an impressive score at the Razorback Invitational earlier this season. The junior's score of 5,426 was a personal best and the second-best mark in the Big 12 this year. Sanderson will face stiff competition from Kansas State's Reinis Kregers, who holds the third best score in the nation.
Jan Jeuschede lead's the Cyclone men in the field events. The Rostrath, Germany native hurled an impressive mark of 62' 5.75 at the Iowa State Classic. Jeuschede enters the Big 12 Championships with the fourth best toss in the conference this season.
The women's long distance crew is primed for a solid performance in both the 3,000-meter run and 5,000-meter run. The Cyclones are led by All-American Katy Moen in the 3,000-meter run. The senior cruised to the nation's 17th fastest time of 9:10.76 at the Razorback Invitational. She was followed shortly by Margaret Connelly, who crossed the line in 29th-best time of 9:20.84. Connelly also anchors an impressive 5,000-meter run squad for the Cyclones, ranking 21st nationally with a time of 16:08.99.
Field events look to be a strong suit for the Cyclones with top-25 rankings in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Marine Vallet enters the Championships with the 22nd overall mark nationally in the high jump. The junior cleared 5-11.25 earlier this season at the Iowa State Classic. Freshman Jhoanmy Luque looks to add on to already impressive first-year campaign in the long jump and triple jump. Luque ranks 21st nationally in the long jump and 35th in the triple jump.
Action is slated to begin Friday, Feb. 27 at 10:00 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles portion of the women's pentathlon. Individual running and field events are scheduled to kick off at 3:00 p.m. CT. Live results will be provided by the Delta Timing Group and a live stream of the event will be broadcast on Big12sports.com.
