AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (7-2, 2-0 Big 12) will travel to Lawrence, Kanas to take on the Jayhawks (8-2, 1-0 Big 12), Friday, for a two-day dual meet in the Robinson Natatorium. The Cyclones are coming off a thrilling come-from-behind win over conference opponent West Virginia in Beyer Hall, 157-143.
“This week, we have focused a lot on our easy speed and just doing things technically right, but KU is a great team and we need to make sure we're performing on the front half of the meet,” Iowa State assistant head coach Kelly Nordell said. “We feel good about our ability to come back, but we have been talking about being strong on the front half of the meet.”
On the boards, diving coach Jeff Warrick is also stressing fundamentals and says this weekend's competition is an opportunity to prepare for the conference meet scheduled for the end of February.
“With this dual meet being the two-day format, we are going to be simulating a lot with Big 12s coming up. Especially with diving, we are going to be doing a prelim-final format on three-meter, and we're also adding in platform,” Warrick said. “We have really been able to look at this, not necessarily as a dual meet, but as preparation for Big 12s.”
While every event factors into the final score, the ISU coaching staff has circled a few key matchups on the lineup. Kansas junior Chelsie Miller will be a force for the Jayhawks, and she may go toe-to-toe with Iowa State's Karyl Clarete in the distance freestyle events.
According to Nordell, Cyclone freshman Kasey Roberts will also be an important factor in the outcome of the meet.
“Chelsie Miller from KU is pretty versatile, so we'll see if Karyl will be swimming against her in the same events as last year,” Nordell said. “Those will be exciting races, but I also think that KU's breaststroker Bryce Hinde matches up really well with our freshman Kasey Roberts in the breaststroke. Those will be key races in the meet.”
Historically, ISU has struggled against the Jayhawks on the road, but recently Iowa State has found success in conference matchups, tallying a 5-2 record in dual meets against Big 12 teams throughout the past two years, including two victories over Kansas in their last three meetings.
If the Cyclones are able to leave Lawrence with a win, they will tie a program record for the most dual meet victories in a single season with eight. The last time the Cyclones reached the eight-win mark was during the 2009-10 season.
