LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team started the second session of the two-day dual meet down 94-56 to the Jayhawks, and the deficit would prove too much to overcome as the Cyclone fell to Kansas, 169-131, Saturday in the Robinson Natatorium.
With today's loss, Iowa State's record drops to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 dual meet competition.
“I'm very please with the way we stood up and raced this morning and competed. That's what we challenged our women to do, and they responded really well,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. “We swam some exceptional times, we almost won the first four events, but we were just touched out in the 200 back.”
The senior duo of Amanda Paulson and Sarah Deis got off to a quick start for ISU, taking first and second-place in the 100 free in times of 0:51.73 and 0:52.70, respectively. Paulson has now recorded five first-place efforts in the nine times she has swam the event on the season.
With a time of 2:17.86 in the 200 breast, freshman Kasey Roberts recorded her second event win on the weekend. The Iowa State newcomer has tallied six first-place finishes out of eight attempts in the 200 breast on the year and has not finished worse than third in the event.
After a strong kick midway through the race, Karyl Clarete overtook KU's Lindsay Manning, grabbing another first-place finish for the Cyclones in the 500 free. On the 2014-15 season, the Canada native has swam the 500 free seven times, posting four event wins and two second-place finishes.
“In the rest of our races, we really competed well, and it wasn't like yesterday when we weren't even in half of the races. So I'm very pleased with the way we came back in the second half,” Sorenson said.
In the diving well, Elyse Brouillette and Sydney Ronald took first and third-place for Iowa State with scores of 259.80 and 244.58, respectively. With an event win today, Brouillette now holds 10 first-place performances on the season. Ronald's top-three finish matches best career performance when she took third at TCU with a score of 259.42.
“There have been some dives that have been plaguing Elyse a little bit, but she did those really well today, so I was happy to see that. She did what she needed to win,” Iowa State diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “There was a couple of weeks when Sydney wasn't practicing as much, but she has come back like it didn't really bother her, which was really good to see.”
On Deck:
Next up for the Cyclones is the 2015 Big 12 Men's and Women's Championships starting Wednesday, Feb. 25 and wrapping up Saturday, Feb. 28 in the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. With a third-place team performance last year, Iowa State recorded their highest finish at a conference championship meet in the Big 12 era.
