AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State divers will travel to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City, Iowa on Monday, March 9 for the NCAA Zone 'D' Diving Championships. Three Cyclones will be making the trip after posting a combined six NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores on the 2014-15 season in Elyse Brouillette, Julie Dickinson and Sydney Ronald.
This marks the first time since the 2010-11 season and the 10th time in program history three or more divers have advanced to the NCAA Zone Diving meet.
“It's pretty exciting. Elyse and Julie got in early, and we were really happy to see Sydney get in. She has been close and she finally achieved the score,” Iowa State diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “This group – even though Becky will not be competing – all four of them have just really pushed each other, and they all have common goals.”
For the 26th-consecutive season, Iowa State will send at least one diver to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships, and Warrick has been at the helm for 17 of those seasons.
“A lot of it has to do with the divers, the talent that they have, their work ethic and their desire to want to go to that next level,” Warrick said of his current and former divers.
The Cyclones are coming off a strong performance in the diving well that helped propel Iowa State to a second-place team performance, its best finish at a conference meet in the Big 12 era. The ISU divers racked up five finals appearances and five All-Big 12 honors – one first-team and four second-team – in Austin, Texas.
After a successful season on the boards throughout regular season dual meets and the 2015 Big 12 Championships, Warrick is preparing his squad for a different atmosphere next week.
“The difference with this meet is it'll just be the divers. Their team won't be there, and they're team players; they love the swim side of it and they love the team aspect of it,” Warrick said. “It's all about how they frame it in their minds and how they think about it. Big 12s was high pressure, there's no doubt about it, and they came through.”
If an Iowa State diver advances past the zone diving meet, it will mark the ninth time in program history a Cyclone has competed in an NCAA/AIAW Diving Championship and the first since Tien Tran in 2010.
“I would love to say that we know for sure we'll have someone go to NCAAs this year. We definitely have the possibility to send someone this year, there is no doubt in my mind about that,” Warrick said. “If not this year, next year we will have somebody there.”
