AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head women's golf coach Christie Martens has taken the Cyclones to the next level when it comes to the Big 12 Championship.
Iowa State, ranked 37th nationally by Golfweek, has finished in the top four in the last five Big 12 Championships. Martens is hoping for similar results at the 2015 Big 12 Championships, April 24-26 at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Texas. The course will play as a par 72 at 6,333 yards.
The Cyclones will rely heavily upon the shoulders of their lone senior Chonlada Chayanun. Chayanun, ranked 68th nationally by Golfweek, is coming off an all-conference performance at last year's Big 12 Championship where she tied for fourth.
Chayanun will go down as one of the greatest women's golfers in school history. She holds the top spot in career stroke average at 74.66 and is on track to break the single season stroke average record at 73.00. Chayanun has carded the top four 18-hole scores all-time in school history along with the top two 54-hole tallies.
Chayanun has three top-10 finishes this season, including winning her first career tournament at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, earning Golfweek National Player of the Week honors and Big 12 Golfer of the Month accolades after the victory.
“The process of getting better is what I we are most proud of,” Martens said about Chayanun. “When you look at her videos from her freshman year, the transformation is insane. She went from being this little girl to someone you don't want to play against now. She hits it 50 yards past the people in her group now.”
Cajsa Persson is another leader for the Cyclones. The junior has had success throughout her career at the Big 12 Championship. As a true freshman in 2013, Persson picked up All-Tournament honors with her fifth place performance.
Martens is bringing a lot of young talent to San Antonio, with three of the five competitors being freshmen. Celia Barquin, a native of Puente San Miguel, Spain, has had the best freshman campaign in Cyclone history. Her 73.37 stroke average is on track to surpass the current record by more than a stroke (74.60 by Sasikarn On-iam in 2010-11). Barquin is ranked 89th nationally and has a team-high four top-10s.
Natapan Siritrai is another freshman who has recorded a fantastic season including two top-10s. Her 74.56 stroke average is third on the team.
The Cyclones are in outstanding shape to earn their record-setting sixth-straight NCAA Regional berth. A strong showing at the Big 12 Championship will only improve their seed.
The tournament, as always, will feature some of the best teams and players in the nation. The Cyclones are among five teams ranked in the Golfweek top-50. Oklahoma State is ranked highest (No. 9), followed by Baylor (No. 20) and coming in at the third highest conference ranking is Iowa State (No. 37).
