AUSTIN, Texas – The Iowa State track and field team had a busy day at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships West Preliminaries Friday, as the Cyclones saw four student-athletes earn trips to Eugene, Oregon to continue their seasons.
Among the Cyclones to advance from Myers Stadium in Austin to Hayward Field in Eugene were Edward Kemboi in the men's 800-meter run, Kendra White in the women's 400-meter dash, Jan Jeuschede in the men's shot put and Marine Vallet in the women's high jump. Joining Taylor Sanderson in the men's decathlon, Jhoanmy Luque in the women's long jump and Katy Moen in the women's 10,000-meter run, that takes ISU's total to compete again June 10-13 in Oregon to seven.
Edward Kemboi was the "Best in the West" on Friday, as he dominated his heat in style to advance to Eugene with a 1:46.23, just missing the Myers Stadium record of 1:46.20. Kemboi handled the race like many, keep it close for 600, before putting in a big kick in the final 200 meters, which saw him pull away to win his section by nearly two seconds.
The first ticket to Eugene punched Friday was by senior sprinter Kendra White in the women's 400-meter dash. White has been on a hot streak as of late, having recorded personal records in the 400-meter dash at her past two meets, the Musco Twilight in Iowa City and the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Ames. She did it again in Austin to advance to the NCAA Semifinals, finishing third in her heat in a new career-best time of 52.40. By advancing to Eugene, White will become an All-American, ISU's first in the women's 400-meter dash since Nawal El Moutawakel in 1984.
The Cyclones' next qualifier for Eugene came via another PR. Jan Jeuschede was in good shape heading into the final round of the men's shot put, as his throw of 61-4 1/4 had him in ninth. He made sure there would be no doubts as he fired a throw of 63-4 1/4, way past his previous best of 61-7 3/4 set a fortnight ago at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships to finish sixth and earn another chance to throw in two weeks.
Sophomore high jumper Marine Vallet will also be competing in Eugene in two weeks. The Frenchwoman was one of 14 jumpers to clear 5-10, doing it without an error. She was unable to clear the next height at 5-11 1/2, but her one failed jump across the first three rounds was enough to keep her season going.
Freshman Evelyne Guay was unable to advance to the next round of the NCAA Championships, but she finished her weekend and season on a high note, clocking a personal record of 2:08.48 to finish 18th on the evening. Guay came into the weekend as the No. 47 seed in the region. Alyssa Gonzalez also recorded a PR in spite of missing out on a trip to Eugene, as she went 59.23 to finish 14th in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Gonzalez now ranks 10th in ISU history in the event.
Redshirt senior Henry Kelley saw his career come to a close as he was unable to advance in the men's hammer throw, with his best toss being 178-11. Freshman Logan Schneider closed out a strong freshman campaign by posting one of his best times in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.31, but not enough to advance. Neither of ISU's women's 3,000-meter steeplechase competitors were able to advance as Abby Caldwell finished 32nd in 10:45.30 and Colleen Riley took 39th in 10:49.77.
Iowa State closes out the NCAA West Preliminaries tomorrow. Action at Mike A. Myers Stadium begins at noon. The first Cyclone in action will be at 1:30 p.m. with Jhoanmy Luque in the women's triple jump.
