AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's golf team continued its tradition of excellence by earning its record-setting sixth-straight NCAA Regional appearance. ISU ended the season with a No. 38 ranking by Golfweek and No. 40 rating by Golfstat.
Setting the record for consecutive regional appearances is an accomplishment for the ISU women's golf team, however head coach
Christie Martens, who is now in her 12th season at Iowa State, has bigger expectations for this year's team.
Despite losing their top player in two-time All-Big 12 performer
Chonlada Chayanun, the Cyclones are still ready to compete at a national level with four returners.
Martens will have just one senior returning in
Cajsa Persson. Persson received Big 12 All-Tournament honors for the second time in her career in 2015. Her 75.30 stroke average landed her fourth on the team and her career 75.14 stroke average is third in school history.
“I'm excited for Cajsa to take the leadership role and see where she can take our team too,” Martens said. “She worked hard this summer and has made some really positive changes and I'm excited to see where she can take us. I think she has a really good perspective and wants to have a really great senior season and accomplish some really big things.”
Martens also has three very competitive sophomores who will be back for the 2015-16 season.
Celia Barquin will pave the way for the Cyclones after finishing in the top-10 at the Big 12 Championship and setting the rookie scoring mark at 73.33, the second-best single-season clip in school history. She led the team with five top-10 finishes and barely missed qualifying for the NCAA finals as an individual after tying for ninth at the NCAA Raleigh Regional.
Another essential component for the Cyclones is returning sophomore
Nattapan Siritrai. Siritrai wrapped the season up as a Big 12 All-Tournament selection and was third on the team in stroke average at 74.61, the second-best rookie scoring mark in school history behind Barquin. Siritrai also earned Big 12 All-Tournament honors with her third top-10 finish of the season at the Big 12 Championship. She snagged three top-10 finishes last season.
Martens will also return sophomore MJ Kamin. Kamin competed in every tournament in last year.
“New (Sititrai) had a solid summer and has been playing well the past few weeks,” Martens said. “We're excited about her. Celia represented Spain in a few tournaments this summer and it was good for her to get that experience. M.J. improved a lot and worked really hard on her game so it should be exciting to see what they can accomplish.”
Coach Martens and the Cyclones welcome two newcomers,
Chayanit Wangmahaporn and
Parinda Phokan, who both had outstanding high school careers in Thailand.
“It's always a transition, but they're at a great skill level and they work hard at it,” Martens said. “They have great attitudes for the game and a great golf IQ. I'm excited to see how that transitions. They're both great players and I'm really excited to see what they can do.”
The Cyclones begin their 2015-16 season at the Dick McGuire Invitational, Sept. 14-15.
