COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Iowa State soccer team (4-1-0) defeated Colorado College (1-3-0) by the score of 3-0 at Stewart Field in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Three different Cyclones notched goals in the victory, with Klasey Medelberg, Taylor Wagner and Haley Albert coming up big for Iowa State.
Turning Point of the Game
The game was scoreless after more than 60 minutes of play until freshman Klasey Medelberg dribbled the ball up and fired a shot from straight on outside of the box that carried over the goalkeeper Louisa Mackenzie and into the net in the top left corner. The Cyclones continued the attack and Koree Willer assisted another freshman, Taylor Wagner, who buried the shot from right in front of the goal in just the 66th minute. The Cyclones weren't finished yet, as Haley Albert found the ball with a ton of space and ripped a strong shot at the top right corner to take a 3-0 lead in the 75th minute.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Klasey Medelberg. The freshman forward opened up the flood gates with her second goal of the season in what head coach Tony Minatta said was “one of the best goals since he has been here.” Medelberg dribbled the ball up down the middle of the pitch and fired a shot from outside of the top of the circle right at the top left corner where the goalkeeper didn't have a chance to make the save. Medelberg led the team in shots with three.
Coach Said It
"It was a slow start,” head coach Tony Minatta said. “I think we were a little hungover from last week's game. We weren't connecting in the first half, but we came out in the second half and came out hard winning the ball and connecting. We got some great goals. Klasey to start us off was a fantastic goal and Wagner on her goal. She was very composed on her shot and that was more of a team goal. The way Roeling put the ball across and how Koree played it in for Wagner to clean it up. Albert's goal was fantastic. Today I think we really came out of our funk and were able to show what kind of team we are and another shutout. I was very happy with our performance in the second half and we can build off of that to play a full game.”
