AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team will host a pair of dual meets in less than 24 hours this weekend when it welcomes Illinois and Washington-St. Louis to Beyer Pool.
The Cyclones will square off with the Illini of Illinois Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. and the Washington Bears Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. Admission to both meets is free.
Last Time Out
The Cyclones will be competing in their first dual meets since a Dec. 11 defeat to the Iowa Hawkeyes that saw the Cyclones set top-5 all-time finishes in the 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke.
Sophomore Mary Kate Luddy clocked in 2:01.46 in the 200 butterfly for the fifth-best time in program history, while fellow sophomore Kasey Roberts' time of 2:15.37 was good enough for fifth all-time in the 200 breaststroke.
Roberts also set top-20 times in school history is three other events on the night, earning her Big 12 Swimmer of the Week and CollegeSwimming.com Big 12 Swimmer of the Week honors.
Senior Elyse Brouillette led the Cyclones in the diving well, earning the top score on the three-meter board. Combined with her third-place finish on the one-meter board, Brouillette's performance was good enough to earn her second-straight Big 12 Diver of the Week award.
Diving Deeper With Illinois
Illinois (7-1, 1-1 Big Ten) comes to Ames riding a three-dual win streak, the most recent of which came against Florida International in early November.
The Illini and Cyclones got a preview of one another at Kansas' Big Challenge earlier this season, where Illinois placed third out of six teams. Junior Gabbie Stecker led Illinois' charge in the middle distance events at the Big Challenge, setting meet records in the 200 and 500 freestyle.
Junior Olivia Kassouni leads Illinois on the boards with the team's five best three-meter scores this season and four of the top-5 scores on the one-meter board.
Diving Deeper With Washington
When the Bears (2-1, 0-1 UAA) take to the pool deck at Beyer Hall on Jan. 16 it will mark the first-ever matchup between Iowa State and Washington.
Washington is coming off a first-place finish at the 32nd-annual WU Invitational last week, where the Bears swept first-place finishes across every women's swimming and diving event. The Bears haven't competed in a dual meet since Nov. 7, which resulted in a 165-135 loss on the road against the University of Chicago.
Senior Sophie Gan is the team's top breaststroker and is nearly 10 seconds faster than the Bears' second-fastest breaststroke swimmer when totaling times from the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Gan is also Washington's second-best 200 IM swimmer this year, with a season-best mark of 2:07.32.
The Bears have only had two divers compete this season and are led by junior Emily Ramos, who owns the team's top score on both the one-meter and three-meter boards this season.
On Deck
Iowa State travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for a high noon showdown against in-state foe UNI on Jan. 23. The Cyclones are 28-1 all-time against the Panthers, including a perfect 17-0 under head coach Duane Sorenson.
