Last Time Out
The Cyclones (4-3, 1-0 Big 12) took first place in 15-of-16 events against Washington-St. Louis to pick up their first victory of 2016, 195-97. Among the 15 first-place finishes for Iowa State were eight sweeps of the top-three spots. That meet came less than 24 hours after the Cyclones fell to Illinois in a battle that came down to the final event of the night.
All three Iowa State divers set a season-high score in one event on the weekend, including Becky Stochl's career-best mark of 244.95 on the three-meter board against Washington. Away from the diving well, Kasey Roberts racked up seven top-two finishes – including four event wins – to earn her second CollegeSwimming.com Big 12 Swimmer of the Week award of the season.
Diving Deeper With the Panthers
UNI (7-3, 1-0 MVC ) enters this weekend's meet riding a five-meet win streak that features a pair of wins last weekend over Illinois State and Quincy, both on the road. The Panthers have amassed a 3-1 record in dual meets in their home water this season.
Iowa State and UNI caught a preview of one another at Kansas' Big Challenge meet in November, at which the Cyclones finished 317.5 points ahead of the Panthers.
The Panthers are led in the lanes by sophomore Molly Lembezeder, who owns the school record in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Lembezeder has also swam on the school's record-holding squad in all five relay events, leading off the freestyle relays and anchoring the medleys.
In the diving well, senior Sarah Kemp is coming fresh off qualifying for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships with a score of 274.5 on the one-meter board last weekend. For her performance, Kemp was named MVC Diver of the Week.
Iowa State owns a 28-1 advantage in the all-time series, including a 17-0 record under head coach Duane Sorenson.
Keep Your Eye On…
The backstroke events, where senior Marissa Engel is looking to continue her strong start to her final semester swimming for the Cyclones. Engel took first place in three individual events last weekend and swam the backstroke leg of a first-place medley relay squad as well.
Beyond Engel, Cyclones of all experience levels continue to finish highly, as senior Kaylee Kucera, sophomore Harper Emswiler and freshmen Guy Shilon and Haley Ruegemer all picked up top-three finishes last weekend.
On Deck
The Cyclones take their final road trip of the 2015-16 regular season, heading east to Morgantown, West Virginia, for their first Big 12 competition since early November. The Cyclones and Mountaineers will also compete against Villanova, making the event a double dual for all teams involved. The meet is set for a 5 p.m. start on Jan. 29.
