AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team heads east on Friday for its final road meet of the 2015-16 regular season when it visits West Virginia. The Cyclones and Mountaineers will also square off with Villanova, making it Iowa State's second double-dual meet of the season.
In their double-dual earlier this season, the Cyclones knocked off TCU, 169-130, and South Dakota, 171-129.
The meet is set for a 5 p.m. EST start at WVU Natatorium in Morgantown, West Virginia, and admission is free.
Last Time Out
Iowa State (5-3, 1-0 Big 12) took to the road for the first time in over three months to knock off UNI, 182-117, and improve to 29-1 all-time against the Panthers. Mary Kate Luddy stood out yet again for the Cyclones, taking first place in each of her three events by a combined 6.47 seconds over the next-closest swimmer. The meet was Luddy's fourth of the season in which she won three events.
Diving Deeper With West Virginia
The Cyclones have won both matchups against West Virginia (1-3, 0-1 Big 12) in the all-time series, which began two seasons ago. In the series' lone meet at WVU Natatorium, the Cyclones took home a decisive 200-93 victory.
Two-time All-Big 12 Second Team member Jaimee Gillmore is coming off a strong pair of dual meets earlier this month featuring eight top-two finishes. Gillmore took the crown in the 50 freestyle twice and 100 freestyle once between meets against Pitt and TCU. She also led off the second-place 400 freestyle relay and anchored the No. 2 200 medley relay in each meet.
Diving Deeper With Villanova
The Wildcats (5-1, 2-0 Big East) will join Washington-St. Louis as the Cyclone's second foe this season that it has never previously competed against. On Jan. 16, Iowa State took down Washington, 195-97, to improve to 9-1 under head coach Duane Sorenson against teams it hasn't previously faced.
Darby Goodwin has burst onto the scene for Villanova in her freshman season, leading the Wildcats in a myriad of events and breaking school records in the backstroke events. Goodwin is one of the team's top-five swimmers in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 IM.
On the season, Villanova has broken or tied school records in seven events.
On Deck
Iowa State will host its regular season finale Feb. 5-6 when the Kansas Jayhawks come to Ames, Iowa. Six Cyclones will be competing in their final collegiate dual meet and will be honored as part of the team's Senior Day festivities.
The meet is slated for a 6 p.m. start on Feb. 5 and a 10 a.m. start of Feb. 6, with both parts of the competition taking place at Beyer Pool.
