AMES, Iowa – The No. 18 Iowa State wrestling team (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) will open up the 2016 portion of their schedule at the Virginia Duals. The Cyclones earned the No. 2 seed, and will face George Mason at 11 a.m. on Friday, followed by Kent State at 1 p.m.
Head coach Kevin Jackson's squad has a rejuvenated look for 2016 with Nathan Boston rejoining the lineup, as well as the addition of Marcus Harrington. Each competed at the Midlands Championships for the Cyclones.
The Cardinal and Gold closed out 2015 at the Midlands in Evanston, Ill. There, Iowa State finished in sixth-place, while four individuals notched podium finishes. Earl Hall (seventh), Gabe Moreno (eighth), Tanner Weatherman (second), and Lelund Weatherspoon (seventh) were all place-winners for the Cyclones.

-No. 18 Iowa State is set to compete for the first time in 2016 at the Virginia Duals on Dec. 8-9.
-Arizona State, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion and Rider are four of 12 teams that will be joining the Cyclones in Hampton.
-To close out 2015, Iowa State competed at the Midlands Championships where they finished in 6th place with 64 team points.
-Four wrestlers notched podium finishes in Evanston. Earl Hall (7th), Gabe Moreno (8th), Tanner Weatherman (2nd) and Lelund Weatherspoon (7th) all took home hardware.
-Weatherspoon faced Northern Illinois' Trace Engelkes in the seventh-place match. He pinned the Husky in 18 seconds, which would later be named the quickest fall of the entire Midlands Championships.
-In their Big 12 season opener, the Cyclones defeated Wyoming 19-14 to advance to 1-0 in conference action. Six ISU grapplers notched wins in the dual.
-Lelund Weatherspoon defeated then-ranked No. 13 Ben Stroh of Wyoming by 11-5 decision. Weatherspoon's six-point takedown and near-fall in the second period were the catalyst to his win.
-Tanner Weatherman is leading the Cyclones in scoring this year. The senior is putting up points at a high clip, scoring 23 takedowns in five duals.
-Four Iowa State wrestlers have been pegged in the national rankings to begin the year. Earl Hall (6, 5, 7) Gabe Moreno (NR, 16, 16) Tanner Weatherman (14, 15, 19) and Lelund Weatherspoon (11, 15, 10) all are receiving national rankings from FloWrestling, IntermatWrestle and TheOpenMat.
-The Cyclones finished tied for 19th at the 2015 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. ISU placed two wrestlers on the podium in Earl Hall (4th) and Tanner Weatherman (7th).
-Following his 6-2 win over Iowa's Logan Ryan in the Cy-Hawk Dual, Dante Rodriguez was named Co-Big 12 Wrestler of the Week. This was the first time in his career that he's earned these honors.
-In their 51-0 roll over Midland, The Cyclones won six matches by fall, the most by an Iowa State squad since 1998 when ISU defeated Cornell College, 48-6.
-Earl Hall and Lelund Weatherspoon both posted 5-0 records at the Cyclone Open and won titles at their respective weight classes.
-The Iowa State wrestling program is celebrating its 100th year of wrestling this season.
-Kevin Jackson is in his seventh season at the helm of the Iowa State wrestling team.
