AMES, Iowa — The Iowa State women's golf team concluded its fall competition Oct. 15, finishing at No. 51 in the national rankings by Golfweek.
The competition was stiffer than ever this fall for the Cyclones as they competed in four tournaments against the nation's best teams. Of the 41 teams Iowa State faced this fall, 15 are currently rank in Golfweek's top-25, including the seven best teams in the country — No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 Florida State, No. 5 USC, No. 6 Georgia and No. 7 Florida.
The Cyclones' top showing came at the Schooner Fall Classic as they posted a team total of 874 during the three-day tournament. Iowa State's second-round 286 matched a season-low and tied the team for the 17th-best round in school history.
Sophomore Chayanit Wangmahaporn led the Cyclones during their fall campaign, leading the team with a 73.36 stroke average. Wangmahaporn carded a season-low 69 at the Schooner Fall Classic, eventually finishing the tournament in a tie for 12th.
Riding her success from last season, junior Celia Barquin tallied her ninth career top-10 finish at the Stanford Intercollegiate, finishing in a tie for eighth at 2-over on the tournament. Barquin continues to hold tight to her impressive career score average of 73.57, still on pace to break the school record by more than a stroke.
Freshman Amelia Grohn made an immediate impact just shortly after arriving in Ames. In the second collegiate meet of her career — the Schooner Fall Classic — Grohn tallied a pair of 2-under rounds, finishing her in a tie for 21st on the tournament. Grohn also matched Barquin for second in season scoring average at 73.55.
Iowa State returns to the links on Jan. 29 at the Northwestern Dual.
