Ieremia Medals, Cyclones Second At Pinetree Invite

KENNESAW, Ga. – Denzel Ieremia captured his first career tournament title by firing a final-round 73 this afternoon at the Pinetree Invitational. Ieremia held a four-shot lead heading into the final round and was able to maintain the margin, winning the tournament by four shots.
Ieremia, who carded a 7-under 209 for the tournament, helped the Cyclones finish second as a team at 875, 13 shots behind host Kennesaw State at 862.
A junior from Hamilton, New Zealand, Ieremia has had a fantastic fall season for the Cyclones, finishing in the top-10 in all three tournaments. He now has five top-10 finishes in his last seven tournaments dating back to last season.
Ieremia had a safe cushion in the medalist race thanks to a blistering 65 in the second round. He bogeyed two of his first three holes this afternoon, but rallied to go 1-under in the final 15 holes en route to his final-round 73.
It marks the 12th time since 2010 where the Cyclones have had medalist in a tournament: Scott Fernandez (4), Nate McCoy (3), Nick Voke (3), Ruben Sondjaja (1) and Ieremia (1).
Senior Ruben Sondjaja had an outstanding tournament, finishing fifth at 213. Sondjaja posted a final-round 74 this afternoon and notched his ninth career top-10 finish along the way.
Freshman Tripp Kinney carded a 71 this afternoon to jump into a tie for 13th place at 222.
Iowa State played without the services of its top player Nick Voke, who stayed home while recovering from an appendectomy.
The Cyclones will finish off their fall season, Oct. 30-31 at the Bridgestone Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
