GREENSBORO, NC—The Iowa State men's golf team finished play at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate this afternoon, finishing runner-up in its second-straight tournament with a 54-hole 838 tally (287-272-279). ISU's 838 ties for the fourth-lowest score in school history.
The Cyclones shot the second-best 18-hole round in school history (272) in their second round yesterday and followed it up with another impressive round of 279 today (9-under). ISU quickly closed the nine-stroke gap it faced coming into today's round, but ultimately came up four strokes short of tournament champion Duke (283-267-284=834).
ISU defeated three teams ranked in Golfstat's top-40 (Northwestern, Liberty, Purdue).
Iowa State's efforts were led by senior Ruben Sondjaja, who finished runner-up (70-66-69=205) for his 10th career top-10 finish. Sondjaja narrowly missed out of his second career tournament title, falling one stroke shy of medalist Nick Budd of Georgia State (204). His 54-hole total of 205 is the lowest on the team this season and ties Sondjaja's best career mark. He now has five rounds in the 60s this season, the most on the team.
Freshman Tripp Kinney had an impressive tournament for the Cyclones, finishing in a tie for 16th (70-68-73=211). His second-round 68 is his best of the season and his 54-hole total of 211 is the lowest of his young career. Kinney has now placed in the top-20 in three of the four tournaments played this season.
Denzel Ieremia (74-67-72=213) and Nick Voke (76-72-65=213) both tied for 23rd out of 84 individuals. Ieremia, who is coming off of a tournament victory last week, shot an even-par round today which was aided by two eagles. Voke, who missed the last two tournaments, fired a scorching final-round 65 that was blemish-free. It ties for the lowest 18-hole round of his great career.
The Cyclones have finished up fall play and will return to action on the links on January 23rd at the Arizona Intercollegiate.
