AMES, Iowa – Iowa State wrestling fans were treated to a sneak preview of the 2016-17 season at the annual Cardinal vs. Gold intrasquad meet. The event took place in front of a packed mat at the Lied Recreation center last Friday.
In the end, Gold took down Cardinal by a score of 26-12. To go along with the Cardinal and Gold matches, there were three exhibition matches that took place, as well as a rousing rendition of the national anthem, which was performed by freshman Gavin DeWitt.
The dual got off to a slow start for the Cardinal squad. Gold took the first five matches, including two by bonus-point decision, jumping out to a 20-0 lead. All-American Patrick Downey defeated redshirt freshman Dale Hilleman by 24-9 technical-fall. Redshirt junior Blayne Briceno won by fall over redshirt freshman Chase Straw by fall in the third period.
Cardinal got on the board after redshirt senior John Meeks took down highly touted freshman Kanen Storr by 6-2 decision.
In what many were calling the match of the night, Kyle Larson defeated Purdue transfer Jonathan Marmolejo by 7-1 decision. The final score did not reflect how close this bout truly was. Trailing 3-1 late, Marmolejo left it all on the mat going for broke on a big time throw. Larson was able to shake it off and get back points to secure the victory for Gold.
Another tightly fought match was between All-American Earl Hall and redshirt sophomore Nathan Boston. Late in the match, Boston held a one-point advantage but was hit with a stall-late that tied the match sending it to extra time. Hall would win 5-4 in TB-1, but Coach Jackson wanted the two to settle it with a takedown.
He sent the two 133-pounders back on the mat to settle it on their feet. In the end, it was Hall who secured a takedown on the edge of the mat to lock in three more points for the Gold team.
In the exhibition matches, freshman Ian Parker provided some excitement when he pinned redshirt freshman Anthony Wesley in the first period. Redshirt senior Gabe Moreno returned to the mat for the first time since last February and defeated freshman Briar Cochran by 15-0 technical-fall.
