TOPEKA, Kansas – The Iowa State swimming and diving team was back in action Friday with the swimmers beginning competition at the Kansas Classic and the divers resuming at the Mizzou Invite.
The swimmers grabbed a pair of event titles and sit in third place at the Kansas Classic, while the divers earned a trio of top-20 finishes.
Kansas Classic
Iowa State flew off the blocks in the first night of finals, taking first place in the A heat of the 200 freestyle relay. The 'W' went to the group of Savanna Townsend, Maddie Rastall, Harper Emswiler and Laura Miksch, who touched in 1:32.91 for the win and the sixth-fastest time in program history.
Iowa State's B squad of Kenzie Goudreau, Evan Hundley, Ashton Ehrecke and Keely Soellner claimed first place in the B heat of the event with a time of 1:36.61.
Soellner, Mary Kate Luddy and Jessi Storer all finished in the top half of their heats in the 500 freestyle, with Soellner leading the way for a third-place showing in the A heat. Luddy and Storer both dropped time off their season bests from prelims to finish tied for second and in fourth, respectively.
The Cyclones picked up their second event win of the night by way of Laura Miksch's tendency to dominate the 50 freestyle. The junior entered finals .01 seconds off the top seed, but swam to personal record time of 23.18 seconds to beat out the second place finisher by .21 seconds. Miksch cut .20 seconds off her personal best with the time.
Iowa State wrapped up the night with its top 400 medley relay squad dropping 6.23 seconds off its seed time. The squad of Emswiler, Kasey Roberts, Luddy and Soellner touched in 3:47.36 to bring day one to a close.
On the day, Iowa State's swimmers put up 33 season-best times and 10 new personal records in individual events.
Competition at the Kansas Classic resumes Nov. 19, with prelims set for a 10 a.m. start and finals for 6 p.m.
Mizzou Invite
Sydney Ronald led the way for Iowa State on one-meter competition, securing a trip to finals with a score of 252.80 in prelims. The redshirt sophomore finished in 12thplace with a score of 248.45 at finals.
Julie Dickinson came within five points of a second trip to finals in as many days, earning a mark of 248.05 to take 15th place. Becky Stochl placed 20th on the day with a score of 242.00 points. Katherine Mueller rounded out the Cyclone field with a score of 173.25.
Platform diving will round out the divers' trip to the Mizzou Invite tomorrow.
Prelims Highlights
*Freshmen Kat Jones (5:04.37), Keely Soellner (4:51.78) and Jessi Storer (5:00.26) all swam personal bests in the 500 freestyle.
*Soellner moved from unranked to the No. 2 spot in the 500 freestyle on Iowa State's All-Time Top-20 Performers chart. Her time was the third-best in team history in the event.
*Cyclones competed in six-of-nine heats of the 50 free, taking first place in three heats. Evan Hundley (24.15 seconds), Harper Emswiler (23.84 seconds) and Laura Miksch (23.49 seconds) all claimed victories.
*Laura Miksch's time was a season-best for herself and the Cyclones and earned the No. 2 seed in the A heat of finals.
*All 21 races swam by Cyclones in prelims set personal bests for the season.
*All six freshman swimmers set personal records in prelims. Jones, Soellner and Storer did so in the 500 freestyle, while Ali Basel, Kami Pankratz and Emma Ruehle did so in the 200 IM.
