AUSTIN, Texas – The Iowa State swimming and diving team opened the 2016 Big 12 Championship Wednesday night by putting eight swimmers on the podium at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The Cyclones sit in third place with 64 points after the first night of competition.
The Cyclones opened the meet by placing two squads in the 200 medley relay's top-seven results, led by a third place finish from Harper Emswiler, Kasey Roberts, Kaylee Kucera and Alex Flatness. The Iowa State 'A' group touched in 1:40.93 for the fifth-fastest time in school history and to become the No. 3 all-time 200 MR team.
Iowa State's 'B' squad of Guy Shilon, Danica Delaquis, Kenzie Goudreau and Savanna Townsend clocked in with a time of 1:43.57 to finish atop its heat and with the No. 7 time in the event on the night.
“What [our finish] means to me is more about what it means to the girls, especially Harper and Kasey with them being sophomores and doing amazing,” Flatness, a team captain said. “Starting the meet off that way, I think is a really good tone for the team to carry through the weekend.”
Iowa State took third place in the 800 freestyle relay as well, with the team of Roberts, Silqi Luo, Mary Kate Luddy and Brooke Evensen touched in 7:19.36. The squad's time is the third-fastest time in Iowa State history.
“[I'm] very pleased with the way we seam tonight with the personnel we had in both relays – they did outstanding,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “Really good swims by everybody… [I'm] very pleased with the day. We're just four points behind KU – they just touched us out in both relays – but there's still a lot of swimming left to do.”
The Cyclones return to the Texas Swimming Center tomorrow at 10 a.m. for preliminary heats, followed by finals at 6 p.m. The Iowa State divers will also make their postseason debuts on the one-meter board, with prelims set for a 1 p.m. start and finals coinciding with the swimming events.

Time Trials Recap
Four Cyclones took part in the morning's time trials, designed to give swimmers an extra chance to make NCAA cuts or personal best times in an event. Three of the four Cyclones accomplished the latter, as Evan Hundley and Mollie McNeel swam the 50 freestyle in 23:95 and 25.42, respectively, and Ashton Ehrecke finished the 100 butterfly in 58.81.
The Cyclones will have another time dedicated to trying to set personal records, as the Last Chance Meet will be the morning of Feb. 28 to follow up the last night of the Big 12 Championship.
