KANSAS CITY, Mo. – No. 17 Iowa State (10-6, 2-2 Big 12) is currently in second-place at the Big 12 Championship with 72 team points. Three Cyclones, Earl Hall, Tanner Weatherman and Lelund Weatherspoon, are all slated to wrestle in the finals tomorrow afternoon.
Following action from day one in Kansas City, Iowa State has now officially qualified four wrestlers for the 2016 NCAA Championship in Kyle Larson, Hall, Weatherman and Weatherspoon.
Second Session – Semifinals
Iowa State sent out five wrestlers in the semifinals this evening. The Cyclones posted a 3-2 record on the front side of the bracket. The three winners not only earned a spot in the finals, but also officially qualified for the 2016 NCAA Championship.
Second-seeded Earl Hall punched his ticket to the finals with a commanding 16-8 major-decision over Oklahoma State's No. 6 Gary Wayne Harding. Hall racked up his 16 match-points via four takedowns, two escapes, a four-point near-fall and a two-point near-fall.
No. 2 Tanner Weatherman is headed to 165-pound finals following a 5-1 decision over Oklahoma's Clark Glass. Weatherman scored on a takedown, two-point near-fall and an escape to notch the victory.
No. 3 Lelund Weatherspoon's match against No. 2 Matt Reed ended in sudden-victory. After three-periods of action, Reed and Weatherspoon had traded escapes and were tied at 1-1. In the sudden-victory period, Weatherspoon connected on a shot and brought Reed to the mat to take the match by 3-1 decision.
To close out the semifinals, No. 4 Dane Pestano fell 11-7 to No. 1 Hayden Zillmer and No. 9 Patrick Downey dropped a 6-2 dec. to No. 5 Patrick Weigel.
Second Session – Consolations
No. 8 Kyle Larson bounced back after suffering a preliminary round loss. In his next match, he defeated South Dakota State's Ben Gillette by 10-4 decision. He then was awarded a win by medical-forfeit from Zeke Moisey to advance and qualify for the NCAA Championship.
No. 10 John Meeks also was able to rebound and come up with a win on the backside. He defeated Zachary Moore of West Virginia by 4-2 decision behind 1:53 of riding-time. In his second match, he wasn't as fortunate. North Dakota State's Clay Ream eliminated him from the tournament via 4-0 decision.
At 157-pounds, No. 5 Logan Breitenbach stayed alive on the backside of the bracket with a 13-2 major-decision over Kyle Glive of North Dakota State. Breitenbach secured four takedowns, a four-point near-fall, a two-point near-fall and rode hard for 1:48 in the victory.
No. 6 Joe Scanlan capped off the day for the Cyclones in fashion. With under 10-seconds on the clock, Malcek and Scanaln were tied 3-3. Malcek had riding-time locked in. Then, in the waning moments, Scanlan shot and scored to take the match 5-4.
