SAN FRANCISCO – Iowa State's track and field program got off to a strong start at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and Stanford Invitational Friday. Iowa State posted a bunch of personal bests, with many promising performances looking forward to the rest of the outdoor campaign.
At the Stanford Invitational, Erin Hooker posted a nearly 90-second personal best in the 10,000-meter run as she finished 11th in her section in 34:00.92, moving her to ninth in Iowa State history. Jasmine Staebler and Maryn Lowry both put up career best times in the 1,500-meter run. Staebler, running her first outdoor race longer than 800 meters, clocked in at 4:29.19, while Lowry checked in at 4:31.77.
On the men's side, Iowa State got a pair of strong performances on the men's side via Derek Jones and Brian Llamas. Jones went under 52 seconds for the first time in the 2016 outdoor season in the 400 hurdles, taking third in 51.99 at Stanford. Jones' performance puts him third in the Big 12 this season. Llamas set a personal best in the 1,500 meter run, crossing the line in 3:48.01.
The men's squad got the first all-time top-10 performance of the weekend courtesy of Trey Achterhoff in the javelin. The Orange City native finished seventh with a toss of 194-8, a personal best by nearly 16 feet and moving him into ninth in ISU history for the event. Nathan Rodriguez also impressed in his 2016 outdoor debut at Stanford, clocking a 13:55.11 en route to finishing eighth in the men's 5,000 at Stanford.
At the San Francisco Distance Carnival, the Iowa State middle distance squads were the feature performers. On the men's side, Brandon Wheat set an outdoor personal best in the 800 with a 1:50.55 to finish fourth in the half-mile, with Jacob Aune right behind him in sixth in 1:51.54. On the women's side Maddie Nagle and Erinn Stenman-Fahaey went 1-2 in second five of the 1,500-meter run, with Nagle clocking in in 4:32.35 and Stenman-Fahey in 4:33.35. Both times were personal bests for the Cyclones.

Iowa State is back on the track tomorrow at both San Francisco State and Stanford. Action at SF State begins at 1:30 p.m. Central, while ISU will resume events in Palo Alto at 4 p.m.
