Iowa State Wraps Up Competition at Arizona State

TEMPE, Arizona – The Iowa State track and field squad had a busy day at the Sun Angel Track Classic, with some of their top field athletes and men's distance runners competing and putting up strong performances.
Iowa State earned an event win on the day via Brandon Wheat in the men's 800-meter run. The half-mile was an Iowa State 1-2 finish as Wheat crossed the line first in 1:50.76, while his teammate Jacob Aune took second in a career-best 1:50.92. Also on the track, Daniel Everett and Brian Llamas took part in the men's mile premiere. Everett led the Cyclones with a sixth-place finish in 4:03.16, Llamas took ninth in 4:04.73.
The Cyclones had its top field athletes in action, the majority of whom were making their season debuts. Christina Hillman made her season debut in the shot put and discus. The six-time All-American took second in the shot put premiere competition with a best throw of 54-6 3/4, which ranks her tied for 14th in the NCAA. Two-time All-American Jhoanmy Luque also made her outdoor season debut in the long and triple jumps. In the long jump, Luque finished third with a best jump of 20-5 3/4, which ranks her 17th in the country this outdoor season.
Also making his outdoor season debut was three-time All-American Jan Jeuschede. The German took fourth in the men's shot put premiere contest with a best throw of 60-3.
